Below are excerpts of the talk I gave at the Joyce Gordon Gallery Poetry Fest and Chauncey Bailey Book Fair in Oakland CA on Saturday, February 19, 2011.
Based on your response and comments, we are growing but you must do better. Understand the Slave System was created for Black People and the singular word “Slave” is a powerful word in the Slave System. You must tell someone everyday that you no longer accept the word “Slave” when it is used to describe us and our forefathers and mothers.

Keep talking about eliminating the word “Slave” every chance you get. Each time you do this you are counterfeiting the word “Slave” and every time you keep using the singular word “Slave” as related to Black people, you are helping the Slave System. If you keep doing this we can make a big change to the Slave System that has been drilled into us and all other people from every way that you can imagine.

You see how other ethnic groups come here and look down on us along with the people that are already here. Can’t you see how people will respect you more when they see us taking the lead in telling the world that we will not accept any one other than ourselves to define our past? No one can tell you your forefathers and mothers were Slaves when it is obvious they were placed in a Slave System.

Why do all the books say “Slave” instead of “Slave System”? Because the word “Slave” keeps you and everyone feeling negative about us and our past and the words “Slave System” keeps you alert and reminds everyone that you know what time it is. When you show that you know what the game is then you will find that the people who are running the game will not try it on you.

So keep on pushing and let me know how you are affecting people in your area. Before you know it we will have a movement across this USA and maybe the world. We changed the word “Negro” to “Black” by refusing to be called by that name and open up a lot of barriers in the slave system against us. We can do it again especially you young people.

I am calling on you and all Black teachers, writers, actors, poets, entertainers, hip hop, activist, commentators, spoken word, etc to join with me using your skills to put the word out that we will not accept the word “SLAVE”any more.

You Can Change the Slave System

In America we have more Black college graduates, more than in any other part of the World. So you see the problem is not education, the problem is understanding the Slave System. What I am doing here is getting you started on a journey that will make you feel very proud of yourself if you begin to practice not accepting the words “Slave” and “Slavery” in regards to our foremothers and fathers. Use “Slave System” or “Slavery System” to replace the words “Slave” and “Slavery”.

I know what I am talking about because I was part of the 60’s that helped changed the word “Negro” to “Black”. Believe me there were Black people who did not want to change the Slavery System at that time. So I am talking only to the people who are open. No negative response is accepted. No time to argue with each other as the Slavery System has taught us to do under the deception of “Let’s be intelligent, I have the right to express my opinion, let’s discuss this matter, you must have something to hide, etc, etc.”

To the people who have other opinions, try to do something with your opinion and see how much work it takes to make something happen. Could that be why we hear so much talk?

We need to stop everyone from saying our forefathers and mothers were slaves. They were in a Slavery System. The Slavery System was created to keep you thinking a certain way. Our ancestors felt like most human beings but the Slavery System controlled them like they were inhuman. If you are a Black person, just picture yourself in the beginning of the Slavery System time and I am sure you will say that you did not feel like a “Slave” but you definitely felt how the Slavery System controlled every aspect of your life.

Well we can change this aspect of the Slavery System and it’s not that difficult. Just start telling everyone whom you talk to that you don’t use the words “Slave” or “Slavery”, you use “Slave System” or Slavery System”.

I know this method works because that’s what we did to the word “Negro” in the 60’s. We stopped saying “Negro” and said “Black People”. We can say what to call our Ancestors; no one outside of our race can define us. How can someone else say what to call our forefathers and mothers better than we can?

I like the fact that you are doing something about the words that still take away some or our freedoms today. I am a person of African decent, whom has ancestors that were taken from West Africa and brought by Spain to be put in a Slave System of Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Yesterday, I used your suggestion when I emailed a friend about my dad’s trip to Africa and described how overwhelmed he was as he visited the places that our ancestors were forced into the Slavery System instead of saying that they became slaves.

Racism is a large institution that permeates our cultural institutions and is like a chameleon in that it adapts to the socio-cultural environment by altering its expression, but it is always there. The inequities are best understood in the context of systemic race biases which have always favored Whiteness as the structure for informing thinking and decision-making in our society.

EXPLANATION FOR THE WORDS "SLAVE SYSTEM"

We think all text books in our schools should be changed to reflect the true description of our existence in America. Don’t use the word “slave” or “slavery” because they only promote the SLAVE SYSTEM. As long as the educational system is teaching with the words “slavery” or “slave” to every young mind, it is easy to see why every one thinks of themselves to be better than us. The SLAVE SYSTEM starts everyone out in our country and the world thinking of us in a very negative way.

Now think about this, all our lives and in the past the term “slave” or “slavery” has been used to refer to our past here in America. Our foremothers and fathers were not slaves nor were they in slavery. They were people just like you and me, thinking, feeling and dreaming. What no one ever says is that we were placed in a “SLAVE SYSTEM”. If you say “slave system,” you will get a complete different picture of our existence here in America than if you say “slave” or “slavery”.We should be praised as a heroic people for fighting the "SLAVE SYSTEM" from our first arrival to America to the present.

Who Invented The Hair Pick?

A bit of knowledge for you about the first invented comb design (the Pick) and the significants of the Kakakiki KombBrush as an upgrade to that design which is more then 11,000 years old.

An article by Angela M. H. Scheuster in the Archaeology, Volume 52 #4 July/August 1999 writes that, archaeologists have found the remains of the Nubian (Black) civilization, one of Africa’s most dynamic cultures. Nubia flourished during the Old Kingdom (ca. 2700-2200 B. C.), becoming the conduit through which exotic African goods - ebony, ivory, incense, leopard skins, and ostrich feathers - reached the Mediterranean world.

The Nubia Museum in Africa (Egypt) is fitting tribute to this African civilization. Arranged chronologically under headings such as “Birth of Culture in the Nile Valley and the Age of Pyramids”. The museum’s artifacts trace the development of Nubian (Black) civilization from its beginnings more than 11,000 years ago to the present. The museum offers compelling proof that the African pick comb is more than 11,000 years old. Proof again that someone like myself who grew up in West Oakland and graduated from McClymonds High school can invent, design, patent, trademark, manufacture a hair product (The Kakakiki KombBrush) that no one has bothered to consider upgrading in 11,000 years is no doubt a good example of OAKLAND IS MOVING FORWARD.

Kakakiki KombBrush Speaks to Students

The Kakakiki KombBrush received a letter from a retired schoolteacher living in Grand Hills CA, but she grew up in Oakland. She is now teaching Afro American History at the school she retired from. In her class format is a section on inventions. She stated that she would like to share the Kakakiki KombBrush with her class. She also asked “If you have time we would like for you to send our students some words of wisdom and encouragement. We have 28 students in our class and we want them to know that a race without a history is lost and we want them to learn our history so they can pass it on”. Well here is Kakakiki KombBrush words of wisdom and encouragement to the class and also to Oakland and the Bay school students, Parents, Teachers, Social Workers, Preachers, etc.
Let’s begin a movement which request that in every book in our schools that refer to us as SLAVES, SLAVERY be changed to read “SLAVE SYSTEM”. How can you expect a child to learn with confidence when you start them off in school describing them to all of the other students with a word that is completely untrue to the historical facts? Our forefathers were not SLAVES but they were placed in a SLAVE SYSTEM. The dictionary describes the word SLAVE, “one who is submissive or subject to a specified person or influence.” It also describes the word SYSTEM, “is a set of principles rules, procedures, laws or the like.” Now you tell me if my ancestors here in America were SLAVES or were they in a SLAVE SYSTEM. So Black students and all other students who understand what Kakakiki KombBrush is saying here can stand up and ask your school to make the changes to the books. Kakakiki KombBrush & The Hip-Hop Community

The Kakakiki KombBrush would like to say, “Praise is do to the Hip-Hop community. You are the only group in the Black community that is developing an industry. You are in every major city and town in America. Not only are you creating your music, you are also creating clothing styles, clothing companies, perfumes, cosmetics, movies, TV shows, record labels, writers, copy rights, diamond companies, etc. No other Black group in America is producing as many jobs as you are. Keep your Hip-Hop attitude - it will help you stay strong while you are developing. Don’t listen to the negative speak.
Haven’t you noticed that every time a brother starts to make some money the negative speak comes out “Every one can’t be a basketball player”, “That Hip-Hop music is bad”, That Kakakiki KombBrush looks funny”. When I was a young man people would say, “James Brown music is bad music”, when Elvis Pressley started copying James Brown’s and made all the money those same people praised Elvis Pressley. Don’t give others a chance to take from you that which you created. The Kakakiki KombBrush is created for Black textured hair (See Advertisement on this page) so don’t let some other people sell it to you and make all the money because you didn’t buy it when it was Black owned. ISSUE OF BAD OR NAPPY HAIR

Did you ever think about where the term bad, nappy hair comes from and why it has been applied to our hair more than others? You remember statements that people made like “that nappy head boy or girl”, “you sure have bad hair”. You know there was no bad hair before the American slave system was created. I don’t think we were allowed to bring any hair grooming tools with us on the slave system ships. So when we got here the slave system master let us use his comb on our hair. Can’t you imagine what it was like back then, no oils, moisturizers, hair conditioners, etc, just our hair and the European comb? When the slave system master saw how we were struggling so hard with his comb he began to say, “you sure have some bad hair” or “look at that kinky, nappy hair”. They never said they should come up with some other comb/brush design that would work better on our hair then their comb. Well the sad part is that from that time to the present we didn’t think about it either. That tells you a lot about what the slavery system can do to a people. It also tells you how important the Kakakiki KombBrush is. It is the only comb/brush in the world that is designed and patented specifically for Black textured hair today. We don’t need to wait on someone to raise us up we can do it ourselves. The word SLAVE as related to African American is a misnomer. It is a word that carries a picture of worthlessness, non-feeling or thinking people who are Black. To correct this problem we must first stop saying slavery, slavery time, slave, etc. In its place use the words SLAVE SYSTEM. When you use slave system you begin to make everyone think about what is the system. It was the SLAVE SYSTEM that was responsible for keeping our ancestors from thinking, feeling, dreaming etc. The dictionary states that a system is a set of interrelated ideas, principles, rules, procedures, laws or the like. So when you use the word slave you are only helping to reinforce the slave system. Today the system is mental and not physical.
So join me in spreading Knowledge, Ideas and Positive Speak (KIPS). Don’t say slave, say slave system when you or anyone speak of that period of time. Short Biography

Let me give you a short biography so that you will know I have not been halfstepping with my life. This KIPS MOVEMENT is a natural result of my involvement with life. I will start with graduating from high school in Oakland, California. I bought my first car and became one of the original low riders in Oakland - probably the only low rider who attended college at that time. Next I became a Black Nationalist and was very involved in the community. I went on to become a mechanical designer for Oakland Kaiser Engineers becoming one of the first Black men to break the color line for that company. Being very conscious of my old neighborhood, I was able to persuade Kaiser Engineers to let me design, train, interview and hire young Black men in an engineering drafting program which covered the mechanical, electrical, piping, civil and architectural disciplines. My next step was to become Vice President of a corporation that my brother and myself owned. We had offices in Berkeley,California, Washington, DC and Kansas City, Kansas. Through my Black Nationalist involvement I was able to produce a TV talk show in San Francisco on Channel 7 for two years called Black Dignity. From there I went Superfly and built the largest Black nightclub in Oakland. It was called Ed Howard's Place. After that point I moved to San Diego and started an Electro-Mechanical Engineering firm called EH Engineering, specializing in research and development, solving problems, inventing solutions using Reverse Engineering and Configuration Engineering documentation methods for fifteen years. This brings us up to date. I am passing on Knowledge through KIPS and hope that I am convincing you to do the same using Knowledge, Ideas & Positive Speaking. Only Speaking to Positive People

I have already told you that besides the benefits the comb/brush offers for your hair, it also truly represents Knowledge, Ideas & Positive Speak (KIPS) - I know this, but I want you to know it also. I have invented and patented a combination comb/brush for Black textured hair. The last time a comb was conceived for Black textured hair was in Africa, today it is called the pick.
